About Ritalin
This medication is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder - ADHD. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain. Methylphenidate belongs to a class of drugs known as stimulants. It can help increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, and control behavior problems. It may also help you to organize your tasks and improve listening skills. ADHD is a chronic condition that mainly affects the child's behaviour, in which a child faces difficulty in paying attention or face hyperactivity (moving constantly), and impulsivity (rapid action). Narcolepsy is a medical condition in which a person faces excessive daytime sleepiness and face sleep attacks that make a person fall asleep suddenly in inappropriate situations.
How Ritalin works
Although Ritalin has stimulant properties, when used in doses to treat ADHD, it actually has a calming effect. It is not known for sure how Ritalin is able to calm children with this condition, but it has been well established that this medication works with brain chemicals.
For those that have narcolepsy, Ritalin is prescribed at higher doses and does have a stimulant effect. This can help patients to stay awake and feel alert throughout the day. Narcolepsy involves uncontrollable sleeping at odd times. Those who struggle with narcolepsy will often seem to be paralyzed when they fall asleep and can often have hallucinations as they are falling asleep. It is also common for those with this condition to fall asleep many times throughout the day.
